Lime Chili Mango Recipe
Today we are making a Lime Chili Mango Recipe! Alright, I know what you’re thinking. But hear me out before you ask why spicy chili would taste good on this luscious summer fruit! So in Mexico, Mango con Chile y Limon is a popular street food. It consists of raw mango slices, sometimes carved into interesting shapes, with chili and lemon or lime. It takes literally five minutes, and you toss it all in a bowl before serving with a stick. It’s an easy summer recipe or a healthy snack! Tajín Seasoning
Originally, this spicy fruit recipe is actually made with tajín seasoning (a type of hot sauce). This spice is a blend of ground chile peppers, lime and salt – which is exactly what we used today, just not from a pre-made seasoning mix. However, you could easily buy tajín seasoning and use this instead of the lime, salt and chili. When making this recipe, make sure to use firm and sweet mangos – it’s easier to cut them into “strips.”
If the ripe mangos are also not very sweet to begin with, then adding lime will cause it to become more sour than it should be.
If you only have mangoes that are not sweet, then you might want to sprinkle some white sugar or brown sugar on them first, allowing them to absorb more sweetness.
Why You’ll Love This Lime Chili Mango Recipe
Top Allergens Free: This delicious snack is free of all the top allergens. This includes dairy, eggs, fish, soy, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts and wheat! It’s something pretty much everyone can eat.
Additionally, the nutritional value for this recipe is really just the calories, fat and other nutrients of the mango itself, since there are no other major ingredients. To be exact, there’s about 0.6 grams of total fat in a mango (so this is also basically a fat free recipe, for those looking to eat low-fat).
Also, mango is one of my favorite fruits (and this will be added to your new favorite summer desserts!). Mango has a ton of of health benefits, including being a source of Vitamins A, C, K, potassium, beta-carotene, folate, choline, magnesium and more.
5 Minute Recipe: The easiest four ingredients you’ll need to add to your shopping list! Mango, chili powder, lime juice and salt! No equipment and only 5 minutes of your time required.
Substitutions
Mango: Make sure you buy the largest and juiciest fresh mangoes you can find. I like the Alphonso Mangoes, which are super sweet and round rather than oval shaped. The skin is a mix of red, orange and yellow. They are firm to the touch, but not firm enough that they’re not ripe. Overall, the variety of mango will definitely make a difference in this recipe.
The type of mango mentioned above is only available in my area at the Indian supermarket when it’s mango season (aka, around June to August where I live).
Chili Powder: Use ground, regular chili powder, not red pepper flakes. The flakes are too large and will not coat the mangoes fully.
Lime Juice: Lime juice has its own distinct flavor here. I do not recommend substituting in lemon juice. If you really like a tangy treat, then try adding lime zest in as well!
Lime Chili Mango Recipe Notes
- Make sure to use a firm mango! If it’s too soft, then the mango pieces will not cut well and you will have soggy “mango fries!” You can also make mango chunks rather than “potato wedge” shapes as I had.
- Make this recipe, then add it to a dehydrator for a dried chili mango recipe! I haven’t used a dehydrator myself yet, so you will have to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for different foods.
- Elevate this recipe by adding some fresh mint or fresh basil – perfect if you’re growing herbs in the summer!
- Try blending this recipe together to make a spicy mango sauce to add to your salads!
