Easy Homemade Vegan Tzatziki Sauce Recipe

Today we are making an Easy Homemade Vegan Tzatziki Sauce Recipe! If you’re not familiar with tzatziki, let me explain. Traditionally, it’s a sauce in Greek cuisine (similar to Indian raita, a creamy yogurt-based sauce) that’s creamy, tangy, and bursting with flavors from fresh cucumbers, garlic, and aromatic herbs. It’s like a Mediterranean flavor explosion in your mouth and pairs perfectly with pita chips, falafel, crusty bread or grilled veggies. It also comes together in 15 minutes and one bow, so it’s an easy recipe whether you’re experienced in the kitchen or occasionally like to try something different.

Now, you might be wondering, how do we achieve that same creamy sauce without the dairy? Well, fret not, my vegan friends, because we’ve got some culinary magic up our sleeves to make this tzatziki sauce 100% plant-based and equally scrumptious. Let’s get started on this delightful journey to make a vegan version of this a Mediterranean classic creamy dip!

Substitutions

Dairy-Free Yogurt: Use an unsweetened non-dairy yogurt, such as oat, almond, cashew or coconut yogurt. Taste test the yogurt – sometimes vegan yogurts are hit or miss. You want to make sure it’s a thick, unsweetened yogurt that you enjoy the taste of plain, before using in this recipe (not vanilla flavor either – it should be plain yogurt)! You may be able to try silken tofu instead of yogurt.

Cucumber: English cucumbers (which are seedless) work best here. Substitute freshly grated zucchini instead.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Try avocado oil, or virgin or regular olive oil.

Garlic Clove: If you’re not a fan of raw garlic or prefer a milder taste, you can use roasted garlic for a sweeter and less pungent flavor. You can also use garlic powder or garlic-infused oil for a subtler garlic presence.

Lemon Juice: Apple cider vinegar or lime juice can be a suitable replacement for lemon juice. For best results, squeeze the juice fresh versus a pre-bottled option.

Dill: Fresh cilantro or parsley can be used as alternatives to dill. Each will bring a unique herbal flavor to your tzatziki.

Mint: If you’re not a fan of mint or want a change, try using fresh basil or oregano. These herbs can provide a different flavor profile while still keeping your tzatziki fresh and flavorful.

Easy Homemade Vegan Tzatziki Sauce Recipe Notes

  • Opt for silken tofu or almond yogurt as your base. They provide the creamy consistency you want in tzatziki. Ensure they are unsweetened for the best results.
  • Fresh dill and mint are classic choices for authentic tzatziki. However, you can experiment with other herbs like parsley or chives for your unique twist.
  • Feel free to get creative with your tzatziki. Add a pinch of paprika for a smoky twist, or some lemon zest for extra zing. It’s a versatile sauce that welcomes experimentation.
  • Tzatziki is best enjoyed with warm pita bread and a variety of fresh vegetables like cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and bell peppers.
