Orange & Pumpkin Pie Spice Oatmeal Recipe

Today we are making an Orange & Pumpkin Pie Spice Oatmeal Recipe! Since it’s officially October (and pumpkin season), and I am obliged to share another pumpkin based recipe to mark the day. This whole work-from-home culture does have the benefit of being able to whip up a quick recipe during lunch breaks, so today I decided to try pumpkin pie oatmeal – but with an orange flavor. Pumpkin and orange isn’t a common combination, but why not?

Cozy fall breakfast foods have a special place on the list of all-time favorite breakfasts for me. Cue warm spices, hug-in-a-bowl, and pecans, cinnamon, pumpkin spice flavor all around. It’s the season of spookiness, of Thanksgiving, of changing colors in nature and new beginnings. I don’t know what it is, but fall just makes it feel like a new chapter of life. This recipe is reflecting a new twist on a common oatmeal flavor!

The zestiness of the orange and the subtle pumpkin/squash flavor complement one another. Also, did I mention it’s October and I’m super excited to keep cooking with pumpkin, from soups, roasted cinnamon pumpkin, even hidden in cookies?

Oatmeal is a healthy breakfast that doesn’t take long to make, and you can also meal prep it in advance on Sunday night for those busy mornings. So check out this 15-minute oatmeal recipe to keep the fall vibes as you sit at home and sip your frothed coffee while watching reruns of Friends!

Why You’ll Love This Orange & Pumpkin Pie Spice Oatmeal Recipe

Citrus Twist: This recipe is a twist on the old pumpkin pie oatmeal! It doesn’t just have the flavors of pumpkin pie, but rather it also contains orange juice, with optional orange zest for a citrus flavor as well. The citrus in this orange and pumpkin pie spice oatmeal recipe adds a delightful burst of freshness to every spoonful. Additionally, the tangy orange juice and fragrant orange zest provide a zesty contrast to the creamy oatmeal base, making each bite a delightful surprise, capturing the comforting essence of fall breakfast foods.

Substitutions: Dry Ingredients

Pumpkin Pie Spice: If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice, use a little over a quarter teaspoon ground cinnamon, pinch of ground nutmeg, pinch of ground ginger, and pinch of ground cloves, for the half teaspoon of spice mixture.

Oats: This recipe uses old fashioned rolled oats, which takes slightly longer to cook than instant oats. However, rolled oats are slightly higher in fibre and protein with a lower glycemic index, as compared to quick oats. You can also use steel cut oats, which are even healthier, albeit taking longer to cook.

For a gluten free option, make sure the oats are certified gluten-free on the label to avoid cross contamination.

Orange Juice: Use an orange, clementine or another similar citrus fruit, using the same amount of juice.

Pecans: Omit for a nut-free version, or use slivered almonds or walnuts instead. Pecans are commonly used in fall recipes, but any other crunchy, neutral nut will work here. I do not recommend to use peanuts or hazelnuts. They have stronger flavors that won’t mesh as well with the oatmeal.

Substitutions: Wet Ingredients

Oat Milk: Use another non-dairy milk, such as coconut milk (it will have a coconut flavor), unsweetened almond milk, cashew milk or soy milk for a high protein option.

Pumpkin Puree: Canned pumpkin puree is used in this recipe, but you can also make it at home with a real pumpkin! If buying it from the grocery store in the can, make sure there are no other ingredients added – it should be just pure pumpkin puree.

Pure Maple Syrup: Pure maple syrup should only have one ingredient – maple syrup! This is not pancake syrup. You can also use another liquid sweetener, such as agave nectar. Coconut syrup, brown rice syrup, date syrup or other sweetener alternatives may work as well.
