Why You’ll Love This Starbucks Toasted Vanilla Shaken Espresso

Homemade Toasted Vanilla Magic: One of the standout features of this recipe is the use of freshly toasted vanilla beans. Instead of relying on pre-made syrups that can sometimes taste overly sweet or artificial, this recipe lets you create your own rich vanilla flavor from scratch. Toasting the vanilla bean with oats gives it a warm, almost caramel-like depth that perfectly complements the boldness of espresso. This unique step elevates the drink beyond a regular vanilla coffee, adding a homemade touch that you simply won’t find in the typical coffee shop version. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, bringing out layers of flavor that are both comforting and indulgent.

Easy Barista-Level Iced Coffee: Who says you need to be a professional barista to whip up an amazing iced coffee? With this recipe, you can recreate a Starbucks favorite right in your kitchen in just 15 minutes. The combination of cold brew, creamy oat milk, and the custom toasted vanilla syrup makes this drink feel just as fancy as any café order. Plus, it’s a fraction of the cost! No more waiting in long lines or spending extra money on daily coffee runs. Whether you’re enjoying it as a morning pick-me-up or a refreshing afternoon treat, you get the satisfaction of knowing you made a delicious, barista-worthy drink from scratch.

Substitutions

Oat Milk: Use unsweetened oat milk, as the agave is already adding some sweetness. If you only have sweetened milk, don’t add all the agave mixture in at once. Add a bit, taste test it, then add more as needed. I don’t recommend to swap in another milk for oat, just because this recipe is based on that nutty “oat” flavor that comes from the toasted oats (and from oat milk)! Other milks have their own underlying flavors, which will change the taste.

Agave Nectar: Try 100% light maple syrup (which doesn’t have a strong maple flavor). The only ingredient on the container should be “maple syrup” and not added corn syrups and other ingredients.

Vanilla Bean: You can try to use vanilla extract (the same amount as in the recipe card) instead of a vanilla bean (I haven’t tried it). However, you will have to add this in at the end after the heat has been turned off, because the flavor can be damaged otherwise. So you wouldn’t get that “toasted vanilla with oats” flavor in this case.

Rolled Oats: Swap in quick-cooking oats instead. Just don’t use steel-cut.

Cold Brew: Starbucks uses their vanilla-flavored coffee for this recipe, but I used cold brew as a quick way to get that chilled coffee base. Choose a vanilla or neutral cold brew flavor. I haven’t tried using this with espresso, and you may not need as much as the cold brew if you swapped it out.

Plus, I recommend cold brew over homemade espresso because different coffee beans (and making the espresso at home) can lead to completely different flavor profiles (I once got a coffee bean with a berry undertone, versus one with a chocolate-y base – the flavors completely changed the taste of my lattes).

Starbucks Toasted Vanilla Shaken Espresso Recipe Notes

  • Toasting the vanilla bean and oats together brings out a rich, warm flavor, but be sure to keep the heat low to avoid burning. Light browning is all you need to unlock that caramelized depth!
  • After toasting, it’s important to sieve the oat-agave mixture before adding it to the milk. This will give your drink a smoother consistency, preventing any grainy texture from the oats while still infusing the flavor.
