Garlic Swedish Potato Recipe
Today we are making a Garlic Swedish Potato Recipe! If there’s one food I know of from Swedish cuisine, it’s the IKEA Swedish meatballs. I think that’s pretty well known, but what else? Hasselbackspotatis is the Swedish name for Hasselback Potatoes, a type of Swedish potatoes. It comes from the Hasselbacken Restaurant in Sweden, where the dish was first served.
It is the Swedish way of roasting potatoes! In the 1700s, Hasselbacken was a tavern in the middle of some thicket (hassel) on a steep slope (backe). So when the Restaurang Hasselbacken opened in 1853, it was known for its large celebrations enjoyed by the wealthy.
The Hasselbackspotatis dish was very popular because of its stylish looks (in terms of serving potato dishes), and its great taste. Since then, it’s become popular worldwide.
A hasselback-style cut makes delicious potatoes with a crispy exterior. To slice these potatoes, I thought of it as the same way I would slice them into potato chips. But for this, I stopped the slice a bit before I got all the way to the bottom, so it’s kind of like an accordion or flaps of sorts, on the potato.
So to season, I used a mix of Italian seasoning (which contained dried basil, oregano, thyme, and other spices), as well as salt and pepper. Feel free to add anything else!
To spice it up, I recommend Indian spices such as chaat masala, garam masala, amchur powder, coriander powder or roasted cumin powder. Mexican spices like paprika, cayenne, or chipotle powder would lend a great flavor as well!
More Garlic Butter!
You might be able to get away with some cinnamon or clove powder added to it, if you’re looking for a holiday flavor? Although I haven’t tried sweeter spices on potatoes, I wonder how it might taste. Let me know if you try it in the comments below!
Mix these seasonings into your grated garlic (and it should be super finely grated, using a tiny hole grater) and butter. Drizzle this all over your potatoes, and reserve some for the end. When they come all nice and crispy out of the oven, pouring more garlic butter over them is the cherry on top!

Substitutions
Butter: I love Melt brand of vegan unsalted butter sticks. However, you can use extra-virgin olive oil, but the butter flavor would not be there (which is the main thing)! I do not recommend any other type of vegetable oil.
Potatoes: Overall, yukon gold potatoes work best here. You can try to substitute russet potatoes.
Garlic: Don’t use pre-crushed garlic cloves. They usually contain preservatives and the taste varies widely from fresh garlic.

- Keep the extra garlic butter to mix with some bread crumbs into it. Then pour it over the potatoes and broil them for a few minutes again after removing from the oven.

Garlic Swedish Potato Recipe (Hasselback Potatoes)
Equipment
- Oven
- Baking Tray
- Pastry Brush
- Small Hole Grater
Ingredients
- 10 small to medium yellow butter potatoes (Yukon gold) washed, unboiled
- 6 cloves garlic grated with a very small hole grater
- 6 tbsp of butter (vegan)
- pink salt, white pepper, black pepper, Italian seasoning mix as per taste
Instructions
- Wash the potatoes to clean the skin.
- Turn the oven to 400F.
- Melt the butter on the stovetop over low – medium heat. Remove from heat when it's melted.
- Using a small hole grater, grate the garlic cloves into the melted butter, along with any other seasonings (salt, pepper, anything else). You can pour it into the small pan directly, or pour the butter into a small bowl first.
- Take each potato and using a sharp knife, cut thin slices that go almost to the bottom of the potato, but not quite. The base of each potato should still be held together, but the top of each potato will be cut as in the photos above.
- Place potatoes on a baking tray, lined with parchment paper, oiled with a pastry brush or sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.
- Using a pastry brush, brush the garlic butter mixture onto each potato, making sure to brush in between the crevices of each potato flap.
- Leave a little bit of extra garlic butter to top the potatoes off when they come out of the oven.
- Bake at 400F for 60-70 minutes. Poke the potatoes with a fork to check whether they are cooked or not after 60 minutes.
- Once removed from the oven, brush with the remaining garlic butter right away and serve them warm!
