Substitutions

Apple: The choice of apple will change the flavor of the oatmeal. Tart apples like Granny Smith will add a tanginess, while sweeter varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji will make the dish naturally sweeter. I used crisp red apples for this recipe, but feel free to mix different types for a balanced flavor.

Oats: You can use quick-cooking oats (instant oats) or even steel cut oats in this recipe. Steel-cut oats are the least processed and have the longest cooking time, and quick oats cook the fastest. The oats will take varying amounts of time to cook depending on what type is used. For those with a gluten-allergy, find gluten-free specific oats by checking the package label.

Oat Milk: Substitute oat milk with any other non-dairy milk of choice. Taste test the milk before using in the recipe. If it tastes good plain, then it will work for this oatmeal. Unsweetened almond milk, cashew milk, soy milk or even coconut milk may work here. Full-fat, canned coconut milk in this recipe will make a much richer recipe with a coconut taste.

Maple Syrup: Pure maple syrup is used in this recipe – this is not pancake syrup! Pure syrup only has one ingredient on the label. You can also use agave nectar or another sweetener of choice, such as monk fruit sweetener for a keto sweetener.

Vanilla: For the best vanilla flavor, use pure vanilla extract or vanilla flavor, without added caramel color or dyes. Vanilla flavor doesn’t contain alcohol, so it won’t have that “extract” label, but will still taste just as good.

Cinnamon Apple Pie Oatmeal Recipe Notes

  • If you like your oatmeal thicker, reduce the liquid slightly or let it cook a bit longer. For a looser, more porridge-like consistency, add a bit more liquid as it cooks.
  • Top your oatmeal with chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) for some crunch, a dollop of almond butter, extra milk, a drizzle of maple syrup or a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.
  • For a nut-free recipe, omit the walnut topping.
