Why You’ll Love This 5 Minute Vegan Avocado Lime Crema Recipe

Secret Protein Ingredient: This dairy-free avocado crema contains a hidden plant-based ingredient – silken tofu! The tofu adds the perfect amount of creaminess, but also makes this delicious sauce higher in protein as compared to traditional dairy-based crema.

Dairy-Free Creaminess: Crema can involve dairy ingredients, such as mayo, sour cream or Greek yogurt. This creamy condiment doesn’t need any animal products to get that creamy texture, but rather the softest type of tofu you can buy (silken tofu) is commonly in desserts and used as a creamy dairy-free base. The avocado also provides a creamy base and lots of healthy fats.

Substitutions

Avocado: Choose a fully ripe avocado. It should be slightly soft to the touch, not too soft and not too hard. Do not substitute with frozen avocado chunks.

Fresh Limes: Substitute with lemon if you don’t have fresh lime juice on hand. Use fresh lime or lemon juice as opposed to bottled juice, which has more of an acidic taste.

Garlic: For best results, blend up fresh garlic to make garlic paste before using in this recipe. Do not add in full garlic cloves or chopped garlic into the blender with the other ingredients. It may not fully break down into a paste. The paste should be made before blending with the other ingredients. Also, do not use garlic powder.

Cumin: Buy toasted, ground cumin seed powder or make your own. You can toast cumin seeds for a minute on a stovetop at low heat until they are lightly brown. Then grind them in a spice grinder to make your own powder.

Silken Tofu: This is the softest type of tofu you can buy at the grocery store, and is usually used in desserts. Do not substitute with a firmer variety of tofu. If you can’t find this at your local supermarket, try an Asian market. You can try using vegan sour cream, vegan greek yogurt or vegan mayo instead of the tofu.
