Substitutions

Pizza Sauce: Check the ingredients in your pizza sauce, to make sure it doesn’t contain animal products such as milk or meat, before using. You can even use pasta sauce, such as Primavera, Basil & Garlic or another flavor of choice.

Plain tomato sauce will not contain a mixture of spices like pizza or pasta sauce would, so if using plain tomato sauce, add in a mix of Italian herbs and spices, such as dried basil, oregano and thyme.

Cheddar & Mozzarella Cheese: There are many brands of shredded vegan cheese (or whole blocks of cheese that you can shred) available at many grocery stores. Taste test your cheese before using – some are hit or miss with the flavor. I used Violife’s brand in this recipe.

All-Purpose Flour: Do not substitute all-purpose flour with any other type of flour for making the pizza dough.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: Use avocado oil.

Xylitol: Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol used as a sweetener. It’s found in small amounts in many fruits and vegetables, and also in baking. It’s lower on the glycemic index as compared to regular sugar, and is considered a non-refined sweetener.

You can swap in regular white sugar as well. If using white sugar and you want the recipe to be 100% vegan, look for white sugar that is specifically vegan. Due to bone char being used in the processing steps of most white sugars, they wouldn’t technically be vegan.

Vegan Cheesy Pizza Buns Recipe Notes

  • If you’re short on time, feel free to use store-bought pizza dough that you can roll out and use. Just check the ingredient list to make sure it’s vegan.
  • Get creative with your fillings! Some great options are finely diced onions, bell peppers, or olives. Just be sure not to overstuff the buns, as that can make them hard to seal.
