Oat Milk: For the best frothy texture, use unsweetened oat milk or another plant-based milk that froths well, such as a barista-style milk. You can also experiment with different varieties like almond or cashew milk depending on your taste preference and desired creaminess.

Vanilla Creamer: Choose your favorite vanilla vegan creamer here. To keep it low-fat, use more oat milk. instead of creamer. However, the texture of using part milk and part creamer gives this recipe the best texture.

Vanilla Extract: When choosing vanilla, I prefer non-alcoholic vanilla flavor (which is different from the extract, since it does not contain alcohol and cannot legally be labeled as “extract.”) Look for vanilla (whether you choose vanilla extract or vanilla flavor) without added color or dyes, like caramel color.

Xylitol: Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used as a sweetener. It has a sweet taste similar to sugar but with fewer calories and a lower glycemic index, which means it has less impact on blood sugar levels. Substitute with vegan white sugar.

Brown Sugar: Swap in coconut sugar. For brown sugar, you’ll want to look for vegan-certified brown sugar, since not all sugar is vegan. White sugar (and brown sugar, which is made off of white sugar) uses bone char during processing, which makes it non-vegan.

Whipped Cream: Find vegan whipped cream from a can at the grocery store, just like dairy whipped cream comes from an aerosol can. There are coconut-based whipped creams (like Gay Lea, the brand that’s in the grocery stores in my area), almond-based, soy-based and more.

Ingredients
  

  • cup vanilla oat milk unsweetened
  • ¼ cup vegan vanilla creamer
  • 1 tbsp xylitol
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • pinch pink salt
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • vegan whipped cream optional topping
  • vegan semisweet mini chocolate chips optional topping

Instructions
 

  • Add all the ingredients, except the vanilla, to a stovetop pot over medium-high heat.
  • Bring to a boil. Then remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  • Use a milk frother to froth up the drink.
  • Pour into a mug and top with optional vegan whipped cream and mini chocolate chips. Enjoy!
