Vegan Homemade Creamy Chocolate Fudgesicles Recipe
Today we are making a Vegan Homemade Creamy Chocolate Fudgesicles Recipe! Fudgesicles are one of those nostalgic sugary snacks from my childhood – maybe for you as well? We always used to have a box of these chocolate pops ready to go in the freezer (along with those gigantic Mr. Freeze freezies)! Fudgesicles, if you’re not familiar, are like chocolate popsicles. But whereas popsicles are more icy and fruity flavored, these are creamy and chocolate-y. It’s like chocolate fudge mixed with chocolate ice cream, frozen into a popsicle … kind of!
But traditional fudgesicles aren’t vegan due to dairy-products added for the creaminess. Although there are many companies making vegan versions of these snacks (like vegan Magnum bars!), I don’t necessarily always want to buy an expensive, gourmet vegan dessert when I can easily make them at home in a more budget-friendly way, and quite easily too. Store-bought vegan treats are amazing, but when trying to cut down on processed foods, sugar and additives, I find that it’s much better to make the homemade version of desserts if I can. It’s usually cheaper, healthier and more satisfying to see the process through from start to end!
So let’s talk ingredients. To whip up these creamy delights, you’ll need a handful of pantry staples. Think rich cocoa powder, velvety coconut milk, a touch of pure maple syrup, and a hint of vanilla extract for that extra flavor. The beauty of these fudgesicles is that they come together with a few simple components, ensuring you can savor the joys of homemade chocolatey goodness with minimal effort. There’s no ice cream maker, no heating on the stovetop, no special equipment, ingredients or steps required.
Minimal Effort Required
Now, creating these fudgesicles is quite rewarding for the low amount of effort you have to put in. You’ll blend together your ingredients, pour them into molds, and let your freezer do the rest. While they set, you can take a breather, catch up on your favorite book or show, or maybe even plan a picnic to enjoy these outdoors on a hot day!
As your homemade fudgesicles freeze, you’ll be peeking in the freezer every hour. Trust that it’s easier to wait out the 6 hours or so for these to freeze, versus pulling them out half frozen and having them break apart when you try to extract them from the mold. When they’re finally frozen, you can run the popsicle molds under hot water to get these creamy fudgesicles out in a perfect shape. When you take that first chocolatey bite, you’ll be coming back to the freezer for seconds!
Why You’ll Love This Vegan Homemade Creamy Chocolate Fudgesicles Recipe
Decadence Meets Health: If you have a sweet tooth for all things chocolate, then this recipe is perfect for you. Do you always choose the chocolate flavor of ice cream when you go into an ice cream parlour? What about when you have the option to choose cookie flavors – chocolate chip or sugar cookies? I know I’ll be choosing anything with a chocolate flavor if I can help it! So if you love chocolate treats, this is for you. With these healthy fudgesicles, you get to enjoy the health benefits of this chocolate treat, all while having a decadent fudgesicle. It’s a win-win!
Creamy without Dairy: Full fat coconut milk is the star of this vegan fudgesicle recipe, providing all the creaminess without the dairy. It’s full of healthy fats and is a great alternative to provide a creamy base without ice cream, heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk or other dairy products commonly found in frozen treats. Yet these creamy fudgesicles have a melt-in-your-mouth feel just like dairy fudgesicles do! They’re chock-full of cocoa flavor and bursting with sweetness in every bite.
Substitutions: Dry Ingredients
Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder is the more processed version of raw cacao powder. Both of these come from the cacao bean. However, cocoa powder has a slightly different taste and is processed in a different way using more heat.
Substitutions: Wet Ingredients
Coconut Milk: Make sure to buy full-fat, canned coconut milk (I love Thai Kitchen brand). This makes the taste decadent due to the healthy fats, as opposed to using carton milk, or a lower fat vegan milk such as almond or cashew. It kind of acts like ice cream, giving the recipe a creamy texture. If you’re looking to avoid coconut, you can also substitute the coconut milk with different plant milk. For example, cashew milk, soy milk (for a high protein milk), almond milk, macadamia milk or another plant-based milk that’s lower in fat. Note that the recipe will taste more icy as opposed to creamy if you use these lower-fat substitutions.
As another alternative, you can try using half pure coconut cream and half plant milk such as almond milk, to replace the entire amount of coconut milk.
Oat Milk: Oat milk works great in this recipe because of its slightly sweet and nutty flavor. You can substitute your favorite vegan milk with a neutral taste, like cashew milk, almond milk or another plant-based milk. To keep it refined sugar-free, choose your favorite vegan, unsweetened milk of choice that does not contain any added sugar. You can use all coconut milk instead. However, the coconut flavor is stronger if it’s not a mix of different milks.
Maple Syrup: You can substitute this with another liquid natural sweetener, like agave nectar.
Vanilla Extract: Choose a high-quality vanilla extract, without additional caramel color or dyes. You can also use pure vanilla flavor, which is non-alcoholic so can’t have the “extract” label.
Vegan Homemade Creamy Chocolate Fudgesicles Recipe Notes
- Make this recipe even more chocolate-y by adding a few mini semisweet vegan chocolate chips into the popsicle molds while pouring the chocolate mixture in. When it freezes, you’ll have little chunks of chocolate studded inside!
- I used a plastic popsicle mold that came with popsicle handles to put into the mixture, but you can also use popsicle sticks in a silicone popsicle mold.
