Vegan Smores Recipe (Indoor + Campfire)
Today we’re making a Vegan Smores Recipe – an Indoor and a Campfire version! S’mores are a popular camping treat for the whole family, that are made using a combination of the words some + more. The traditional recipe for a s’more is usually made around an open fire by toasting marshmallows on a skewer.
Then each toasted marshmallow is put together with two graham crackers and a piece of chocolate in between, making this classic combo of chocolate-marshmallow-cookie-sandwich! This combination makes s’mores so irresistible, with the gooey marshmallow, the chocolate dripping out of each bite and the crunchy texture of the cookie all together.
But what about those days you want s’mores, but don’t want to have to deal with making a campfire? Or maybe you live in a place where you can’t make a burning fire just for the purpose of toasting a few marshmallows? Instead of this, the indoor recipe is made in almost the same way. Instead of toasting the marshmallows over a campfire, we broil the entire s’more for two minutes, once assembled.
Indoor or Outdoor
If you’re in the mood for a more adventurous and traditional experience, then campfire s’mores is for you. Head outdoors to a safe area, build a fire, and gather around with a large group of friends and family. Put your vegan marshmallows on long sticks or skewers and toast them over the open flame until they reach that irresistible golden brown color. Once perfectly toasted, assemble your s’mores with graham crackers and chocolate!
Whether you prefer the convenience of an indoor setting or the rustic charm of a campfire, this Vegan S’mores Recipe caters to both options, ensuring you can enjoy the iconic treat in any environment. So gather your ingredients and let’s get started!
Why You’ll Love This Vegan Smores Recipe
Indoor + Campfire Option: This recipe can be made indoors using an oven, or outdoors using a fire. The versatile nature of this Vegan S’mores Recipe allows you to enjoy the indulgence of s’mores no matter the location or weather conditions. So make some s’mores on your next camping trip for some happy campers!
When you choose the indoor option, you can utilize your oven or toaster oven to create these scrumptious treats. Simply preheat your oven to broil or set it to the highest temperature. Then assemble your s’mores with vegan marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate, and place them on a baking sheet. After a quick blast in the oven, you’ll have perfectly melty and gooey s’mores ready to be devoured.
Fun and Interactive: Making s’mores is not just about the end result; it’s also about the experience. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows over a campfire or toasting them in the oven, the process of assembling your s’mores can be a fun and interactive activity. This is the perfect thing to do on family nights or camping trips!
Nostalgic Comfort: S’mores give you that warm and fuzzy feeling of nostalgia. This vegan version allows you to relive those childhood memories (and make some new ones while you’re at it)!
Substitutions
Marshmallows: Traditionally, marshmallows use gelatin, which isn’t vegan because it comes from the processing of animal parts to obtain the collagen in them, for gelatin’s jelly-like texture. The good news is that there are now vegan marshmallow brands available, that taste just like the original gelatin-based marshmallows you may have grown up eating (did you also devour Rice Krispies Treats in your school lunch bag, with the bright blue wrapping?! It’s nice to know that there’s now vegan options for marshmallows, to make all these gelatin-based treats vegan)!
I use Dandies brand of vegan marshmallows, which contain soy. You may be able to find soy-free vegan marshmallows as well, from another brand. Dandies makes large marshmallows, which are perfect for s’mores. Mini marshmallows easily fall out of the cookie sandwich, so I don’t recommend the smaller size.
If you can’t find vegan marshmallows or prefer a fluffier texture, you can try using vegan marshmallow fluff as a substitute. There are vegan brands available that offer a creamy and sweet marshmallow-like spread that works well in s’mores.
Graham Crackers: I found gluten-free, vegan graham cracker squares in the vegan and gluten-free section of the grocery store. Traditional graham crackers use honey, which makes them not vegan.
If you can’t find vegan graham crackers or prefer a different flavor profile, you can substitute them with vegan biscuits or cookies of your choice. Look for options that have a similar texture and taste to graham crackers. This could be vegan digestive biscuits or oatmeal cookies.
Chocolate: Use your favorite chocolate here! Just check the label to make sure the chocolate does not contain dairy products, like milk. You can use dark chocolate squares. I don’t recommend to use chocolate chips, because they fall apart in the sandwich as compared to one chocolate square.
I usually use semisweet chocolate for s’mores. This is because of the higher sugar content and sweetness going perfectly with the marshmallow and graham crackers.
Did you know that there’s now a vegan brand of Hershey’s Chocolate? This traditional chocolate bar would go perfectly in a s’more too!
Vegan Smores Recipe (Indoor + Campfire) Notes
- To add a creamy and nutty element to your s’mores, consider spreading a layer of vegan nut butter. For example, almond butter or peanut butter, on your graham crackers. The combination of nut butter, chocolate, and biscuit creates a delicious flavor profile (and if you use peanut butter, this is like making peanut butter cups inside a s’more)!
- Depending on the size of your graham cracker, you may have to break them into two to make a sandwich out of the graham cracker halves.
- Make gourmet s’mores for some new favorite ways to eat this classic treat! Try adding vegan cookie butter, chocolate graham crackers, or use Oreo cookies instead of graham crackers.

Equipment
- Oven indoor option
- Long Sticks or Skewers outdoor option
Ingredients
- 20 regular size vegan graham crackers
- 10 large vegan marshmallows
- 10 large squares vegan semisweet chocolate
Instructions
Indoor Method
- If making the s'mores indoors, then select the broil button on the oven.
- Place a sheet of parchment paper or a cookie sheet on a baking tray.
- Layer the s'mores together. Start with one graham cracker as the base, top with one of the chocolate pieces, then a marshmallow, and the second graham cracker on top. Repeat to make 10 s'mores.
- Once the oven is ready, place the baking tray in there for 1-2 minutes. The s'mores will begin to burn quickly, so keep a close eye on them. Remove the tray from the oven as soon as the marshmallows begin to get toasted. Each oven will vary, but my oven took a full 2 minutes.
- Once the baking tray is removed from the oven, enjoy the s'mores while they're hot!
Outdoor Method
- If making the s'mores outdoors over a campfire, then put one marshmallow on one skewer or stick at a time. Toast the marshmallows over the campfire until golden brown.
- Place each marshmallow with a square of chocolate in between two graham crackers, to form a sandwich.
- Enjoy warm!
Notes
-
Storage
- I do not recommend to store these, as the marshmallows won’t have the same texture as when they’re freshly toasted.
